Disclaimer & Methodology
This page explains what the Competency Self-Assessment is, how it was constructed, what it can reasonably tell you, and what it cannot. Please read this before taking the assessment.
What this assessment is
The Competency Self-Assessment is a professional development tool designed to help HR practitioners reflect on their knowledge, judgment, and situational decision-making across the core competencies of the HR profession. It was built by an HR leader as a resource for the HR community — not as a clinical instrument, a hiring tool, or a substitute for professional evaluation.
The assessment draws on publicly available HR competency frameworks as a structural reference, combined with Situational Judgement Test (SJT) methodology and scenario-based items developed in the style of established behavioural and leadership assessment practice. The items are original and purpose-written; no licensed, proprietary, or copyrighted assessment content has been reproduced.
Methodology
The assessment uses a multi-method approach:
- Knowledge items — questions testing HR policy, employment law, operations, and best practice across domains including Employee Relations, HR Operations, Talent Management, Total Rewards, and Compliance.
- Situational Judgement Tests (SJTs) — scenario-based items presenting realistic workplace situations and asking you to identify the most effective response. These assess professional judgment rather than recall.
- Behavioural-style items — questions exploring leadership tendencies, decision-making style, and interpersonal effectiveness, developed using established behavioural assessment conventions.
Each session draws 75 questions from a larger randomised bank of 200–300 items, with answer options shuffled. This means no two sessions are identical, and the bank is weighted across competency domains to ensure balanced coverage.
Scoring maps responses to competency clusters, producing a profile of relative strengths and areas for development — not a pass/fail grade.
Limitations
This assessment has meaningful limitations that you should understand before drawing conclusions from your results:
- Not a validated psychometric instrument. The assessment has not been subjected to formal psychometric validation (factor analysis, test-retest reliability studies, criterion validity research, or normative benchmarking). Its items reflect professional judgment and domain expertise, not a validated measurement framework.
- Self-reported results. Scores reflect how you respond to items under self-assessment conditions, not independent observation of your behaviour or performance.
- No clinical or diagnostic value. Results do not diagnose competence, fitness for a role, suitability for promotion, or any clinical or psychological characteristic.
- Context dependency. HR practice varies significantly by industry, geography, organisation size, and regulatory environment. Items reflect a broadly international, corporate HR context and may not map precisely to your specific setting.
- Not a hiring tool. This assessment is not designed, validated, or appropriate for use in recruitment, selection, performance management, or any employment decision.
Results are shown on-screen only and are not stored, transmitted, or recorded. No personally identifiable information beyond the name, job title, company, and email address you provide at the start is collected, and this is used only to personalise your results display — not for any other purpose.
Intellectual property & framework references
This assessment references publicly available structural concepts from established HR competency and behavioural assessment practice — including competency domain structures and item style conventions — as a professional reference point only. No proprietary item content, scoring algorithms, or licensed material from any third party has been used or reproduced.
